It's my birthday

tomorrow.
In the morning I'm going to get up early (have to teach at 7:45, hijole!) and get myself a soy latte and an almond croissant from Bread and Cie. Yum.
Then to school.
Then to home to throw on shorts, grab bag and get picked up by Nancy. She, cali and I are headed to Glen Ivy, a spa in Corona to soak and get muddy and chat.
then to a yummy dinner. Wine. Feeling clean and relaxed.
Then to home, to bed to wake with nothing pressing.
I'm 38. Holy guacamole.

Reading.

Richard Llewllyn's "How Green Was My Valley" and boy, am i glad I'm not a coal miner. Just got off the phone talking to my dad, though and he was telling me about being a kid in Scotland and riding the bus in the rain with miners whose faces were black with coal dust, and how the rivulets of water would run down their faces, leaving them streaked.
Family: our great Uncles John, Pat, Jim, and Benny McGrath were all coal miners, bless 'em.

Viuda

In TJ yesterday I was sipping a coke in the tienda of my friend Elvira when a girl I used to teach, Alejandra, came in for some plastic bags. She is obviously much taller than she was 10 years ago, but otherwise looked the same. She was very warm and sweet. Oddly enough, I remember that she wasn't one of my favorite kids (kind of whiny) but as an adult she seems really nice. Lovely dimples. She invited me to her house to see her baby and so I went. Her baby, Luis was dimply and gurgly and pretty much adorable. We took a few pictures and then I had to go.

Back at the Bosco, Dona Socorro told me that Alejandra is a viuda, a word I didn't know. "Se murio su esposo," she said. At eighteen, she has been a mother and lost a husband to cancer. I can't imagine. Next time I go, I'm bringing her some diapers.

In my head

Listening to Sam Phillips' "Reflecting Light." All day.

She's married to T-Bone Burnett. Who knew?

Check it out, bitches!

Sorry about the profanity. But hey, this is exciting! Lookie:

And yes, I've lost the ability to do links. Movable Type took away the little URL button. It makes me sad because it's another thing I need to figure out and who has the time?

So, clumsy linkage. But look, because it's a book of San Diego writing and I'm in it, bitches!
